About Hydropower
What is Hydropower
Hydropower is energy gained from the natural movement of
moving or falling water.
In this process flowing water is
used to spin a turbine connected to a generator. The most
common type of hydropower plant uses a dam on a river to
store water in a reservoir. Water released from the
reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in
turn activates a generator to produce electricity. Alternatively, a specially constructed reservoir located in
high altitude collecting water from several rivers, leads
the water though pipelines and tunnels to the turbines
located at a much lower altitude.
