US Hydropower Update

November 17, 2004

Updates on:

Congressional Appropriations Bills to Pass this Week!—

The House and Senate foreign operations subcommittees are including language supporting US Hydropower’s the public/private sector partnership on hydropower in the 2004 appropriations markup. The bill is expected to pass this week.  US Hydropower has also been working on language to support the Clean Energy Technology Export Initiative (CETE) in the Energy and Water bill.  A continuing resolution is expected to be passed, and the bill is expected to be moved early 2005.  Once the bill passes, US Hydropower staff will work with Congressional staff to assure appropriate funding by USDOE USAID supporting the program.

A significant amount of work goes into educating Senate and House members and their staff on industry issues.  Many thanks to all of you who attended meetings, wrote letters, and made phone calls in support of our effort.

US Hydropower to meet US Ambassador to India--

US Hydropower will meet David Mulford, US Ambassador to India Wednesday, November 17th  in Washington, DC.

US Hydropower to participate in PowerGen Renewable Energy Roundtable—

Norm Bishop, MWH, and US Hydropower Board of Director Member, will represent US Hydropower on a renewable energy roundtable at the Power Gen Conference in Orlando on December 2nd.

Gearing Up for US Hydropower India Task Force Meetings—

In mid-December, US Hydropower’s India Task Force will visit with top officials from the state electricity boards, energy regulatory commissions, and other relevant agencies in Mumbai, and Shimla.  US Hydropower will also host a luncheon meeting on hydropower policy and finance issues with a special focus on rehab projects with the Central Government in Delhi.  We will meet with USAID also, to chart out some joint activities over the next 3 years, aimed at getting Greenfield and rehab projects in the ground.  These meetings will provide an excellent sense of the opportunities and allow members to meet energy decision makers and potential clients/partners.

A special thanks to DLZ Corporation and Synergics Energy Development for their help in coordinating meetings during this visit.  If you would like to join us, please contact us immediately so that we can help with your travel planning.
